The Battle of Camperdown
The swansong of the Dutch Navy

Allon Klebanoff, Israel

The battle of Camperdown (Dutch – Het Zeeslag bij Kamperduin) is the first, and the last, major engagement involving the Dutch navy during the classical age of sail (1793-1815). The navy of the Batavian Republic, as was the name of the new political entity established by the French after their occupation of the Low Countries in 1795, was harnessed to the interests of the revolution. 1797, a bad year for both sides in the naval war, due to defeats and mutinies, saw the last attempt of the Dutch navy to regain some of the glory of bygone days.
