Twelfth International Napoleonic Society Congress
Napoleon and Revolutions Around the World

Parque Central Hotel

Havana, Cuba, July 7-11, 2014

The International Napoleonic Society, in association with the Muséo Napoleonico and the Office of the Historian of the City of Havana is pleased to announce the 12th INS Congress, July 7-11, 2014 at the Iberostar Parque Central Hotel :
( in Havana, Cuba.

The theme of the 2014 Congress is Napoleon and Revolutions Around The World and we anticipate the participation of INS members from around the world as well as scholars of Latin American history who will seize the opportunity to discuss Napoleonic History.

We encourage papers that focus on elements of Napoleonic history and the intended/unintended ‘chains of events’ in the subsequent history of the revolutions of nineteenth and twentieth centuries.  (Anyone who delivers a paper that makes a direct connection to Havana gets a free mojito!)

Papers should be no more than 15 pages double-spaced and presentations are not to exceed 20 minutes. Please complete the registration form and also include a one-page summary of your paper and a résumé. We encourage you to submit all information by email. Selected papers will be published in our journal Napoleonic Scholarship and/or on our website.

An important focus of the Congress will be the Muséo Napoleonico in Havana – considered by many to be the finest Napoleonic Museum outside of France. We have been planning this Congress for months and special events, tours, and receptions are in the works. We have arranged a special conference rate at the Parque Central Hotel and we are also arranging sponsorship deals with major airlines.

In the near future we will send out specific information to help you make arrangements, book your travel and participate in extra-curricular tours for this exciting Congress. We sincerely hope you will take the opportunity to extend the Congress into a longer stay in Cuba so that you may enjoy this terrific country, whether it is your first visit, or you have visited before. What a great opportunity to bring your spouse/significant other! We will have activities organized during the conference to keep them busy.

The official languages of the conference will be English, French and Spanish and we will have translation services available. Hotel registration and further information will be forthcoming via email and on our website. If you have not already done so, please send us your email address, as that is our preferred means of communication.

Special Note for INS members
who are American citizens:

Cuba loves visitors from all countries including the United States. The Cuban Government places no restrictions on American tourists and delivers the same message to all tourists: “Please come and spend your money”.

The United States Government, however, does restrict its citizens from visiting Cuba without specific permission.  Fortunately, exemptions are available for US citizens to visit Cuba and the 2014 INS Congress meets the criteria for a general license (4, Section IV). We suggest you visit the website of the US Treasury Department ( for details on applying for an exemption and to contact the INS for the specific information you may need for your application. We encourage you to start the process as early as possible.

In addition, here is a good NYT article regarding the current realities for Americans wishing to travel to Cuba. (
