Napoleon, and the Mediterranean

Ajaccio, Corsica, France July 7–11, 2008

David Markham & General Michel Franceschi
celebrate the successful conclusion of the
INS Congress in Dinard, France

Letter from President Ben Weider

Dear INS Fellows,

I am pleased to announce that we will hold the Sixth International Napoleonic Congress in Ajaccio, Corsica, France, 7–11 July, 2008. Ajaccio is the birthplace of Napoleon and a beautiful city. The Congress will include visits to Ajaccio’s Napoleonic sites, and will include time for you to explore this beautiful city on your own as well.

The theme of the Congress is Napoleon’s Mediterranean and Island Adventures, and most papers will focus on Napoleon’s experiences in and around the Mediterranean, as well as the islands of Aix and St Helena.

A special feature of this Congress is a day visit to the Island of Elba, where Napoleon spent almost a year in exile. That visit has been underwritten by the INS and will include a flight to and from as well as a bi-lingual tour of the Island’s important Napoleonic sites. Participation in this trip may be limited and priority will be given to those who submit their paper proposals early and who are going to attend all or at least most of the Congress.

This Congress will also be the first Napoleonic Congress to be podcast. The talks will be recorded and a DVD (free to participants) created that will include the lectures and possibly video and other related material.

There is no more appropriate or beautiful place to hold a Napoleonic Congress than Ajaccio. I strongly encourage you to attend and, if at all possible, present a paper.

As in the past, there will be no registration fee for this Congress. We are recommending five hotels of varying expense, a list of which is enclosed. Please make your arrangements directly with the hotels and then inform David Markham where you are staying. As this is a resort community, we strongly recommend you make your hotel arrangements quickly.

For further information, to obtain registration materials or to submit paper proposals, please contact:

Best regards,
Ben Weider, President

Ajaccio, Corsica,

The International Napoleonic Society will hold its sixth International Napoleonic Congress in the beautiful city of Ajaccio, capital of Corsica and birthplace of Napoleon. Ajaccio is full of important Napoleonic historical sites. The Congress is held with the cooperation and support of the city of Ajaccio, and will be held in the Palais des Congrès, located by the harbor.

Special features of this Congress include:

 A visit to the island of Elba, including a round trip flight and a bi-lingual bus tour of Napoleonic sites and other areas of interest. The INS has underwritten this trip to Elba and there will be no cost to participants, but seating is very limited. Priority will be given to (1) those who submit paper topics and reserve hotels first and (2) those who are staying for all or almost all of the Congress.

 The first-ever podcast of a Napoleonic Congress. The presentations will be converted to podcasts by Cameron Reilly of thepodcastnetwork.com and included on a DVD (free to participants) that may include video and other material related to the Congress. Podcasting is the new way to reach thousands of people and we are excited to include this technology in our Congress.

 Performance of original music on Napoleon’s Hundred Days by composer Sean Richarz of Seattle. Sean is composing a musical of this period and will be on hand to share some of his compositions with us.

The Congress is being organized by Executive Vice-President J. David Markham and retired French General Michel Franceschi. We encourage scholars to submit paper proposals that reflect the theme of the Congress or are the result of important new research. Previous International Napoleonic Congresses have been held in Italy, Israel, Georgia and France. They have attracted scholars and students from around the world. We encourage all people interested in this era to attend this Congress, whether or not they wish to give a paper.

Please note that Ajaccio is a very popular destination in the summer, so it is very important that those wishing to attend make their hotel reservations as soon as possible. Please see the hotel information on this site.
