RE: The 2008 Literary Awards

It is with distinct pleasure and pride that we announce the results of the 2008 Literary Book Award of the International Napoleonic Society.

We are indebted to the presses that submitted twelve excellent volumes to the 2008 Literary Committee for the annual literary prizes. We are pleased to announce that, as a result of the evaluations by the Committee, composed of Alexander Grab, David Markham, Jeanne Ojala, Brian deToy and John Severn the following awards have been made:

First Prize of $1000 is awarded to Charles Esdaile for his volume Napoleon’s Wars:An International History, 1803-1815, published by Penguin Group ( UK).

Second Prize of $500 is awarded to Alexander Mikaberidze for his volume The Babble of Borodino: Napoleon Against Kutuzov, published by Pen and Sword Military.

Each of these publications has met the rigorous criteria published by the Literary Committee; they represent a significant contribution to the study of the Napoleonic and Revolutionary period as exemplified by the quality of research, originality, style and analysis.

In addition, two President’s Choice awards have been awarded from the same list of publications. INS founder and first President, Ben Weider, had arranged for David Markham to receive the award for his The Road to St Helena: Napoleon After Waterloo, published by Pen and Sword. David contributed the monetary portion of the award to scholarships to bring students to the INS Congress in Montreal. President Markham also awarded a President’s Choice award to John G. Gallaher for his Napoleon’s Enfant Terrible: General Dominique Vandamme, published by the University of Oklahoma Press.

It is a pleasure to congratulate each of these scholars on their commitment and achievement.
